API Acquires The Intern Group to Expand Global Education and Career-Focused Learning

Academic Programs International (API) has announced a major strategic acquisition, bringing The Intern Group (TIG) into its broader international education portfolio in a move designed to tightly integrate global learning with professional career development.

The acquisition unites two prominent organizations within the international education sector. Over its 15-year history, The Intern Group has successfully placed more than 15,000 students from over 150 nationalities into high-quality internships. TIG brings to API an extensive network of thousands of host companies spanning nine global cities, alongside a robust offering of remote internship opportunities.

For API, which is approaching its 30th anniversary in 2027, the acquisition represents a significant expansion of its signature "Learn, Work, Thrive" student framework. The framework is designed to intentionally connect traditional academic experiences abroad with practical professional development, ensuring that students achieve measurable long-term career outcomes upon graduation.

Executives from both organizations emphasize that the combined offering will fundamentally raise the bar for how the international education sector connects global learning directly to careers. By merging accredited study abroad programs with international internships and API’s proprietary ConnectAIQ student platform, the companies aim to make career readiness an essential pillar of global education rather than an afterthought.

Patrick Vogt, CEO of API, explained that the overarching goal of the acquisition is to create more accessible pathways for students to reap the benefits of international experiences.

"At API, students come first. Everything we do starts with what helps them learn, grow, and launch their careers, and when we serve university students well, we serve universities well," Vogt said. "The Intern Group has spent 15 years opening professional doors for students around the world, and together we can make career relevance a core part of global learning from day one, not an afterthought."

ogt added that the partnership establishes a new standard for the industry. "This sets a new standard for our industry: one connected global journey where students learn, work, and thrive, and where universities can show the outcomes that matter," he noted.

The acquisition directly strengthens the "Work" element of API’s three-part student framework. Moving forward, university students will be able to access international internships as standalone experiences or seamlessly combine them with semester and summer study abroad programs.

Furthermore, the combined organization aims to address longstanding systemic barriers that frequently prevent students from pursuing international opportunities. These barriers include financial affordability, obtaining academic credit, physical safety concerns, and anxieties regarding potential disruptions to standard graduation timelines. To mitigate these challenges, students participating in the expanded programs will also gain full access to API’s established infrastructure of housing, safety protocols, and comprehensive on-site support services.

David Lloyd, co-founder and CEO of The Intern Group, echoed these sentiments, noting that the integration will help make professional international opportunities accessible to a much broader and more diverse student population.

"Talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t," Lloyd stated. "Our students have always gone abroad to launch careers. As the ‘Work’ in API’s ‘Learn, Work, Thrive’ journey, our internships can now reach far more students, connected to their studies and supported by ConnectAIQ."

The strategic merger also successfully brings together two extensive and established university networks. API currently maintains active partnerships with more than 800 member and affiliate institutions, primarily across the United States. Meanwhile, The Intern Group brings relationships with over 150 universities worldwide.

Under the new operational structure, API’s institutional partners will gain immediate access to TIG’s expansive international internship network. Conversely, TIG’s existing university partners will now have the opportunity to explore API’s extensive portfolio of accredited study abroad programs. Both organizations have confirmed that all pre-existing partnership agreements will remain completely unchanged.

Speaking in an interview with The PIE News, Lloyd shared that approximately 35% of TIG’s internship participants originate from the United States, highlighting the diverse global student mix that the newly combined entities intend to build upon.

Vogt noted that API’s US university partners have responded with immense enthusiasm during early conversations about the merger. He emphasized that institutions are increasingly demanding international education and internship programs that can explicitly demonstrate strong career relevance.

"Our university partners tell us their students want global experiences that lead somewhere. The response has been overwhelmingly positive," Vogt said, noting that the partnership successfully marries API’s strong US university relationships with TIG’s broad international footprint.

Technology will serve as a foundational pillar for the combined offering, anchored by API’s ConnectAIQ. This advanced artificial intelligence platform is specifically designed to match students with appropriate study abroad and international internship opportunities based on their unique individual circumstances.

Rather than relying on traditional, cumbersome application forms, the platform evaluates a student’s specific academic interests, financial situation, and long-term career aspirations before recommending tailored program pathways.

According to API, ConnectAIQ will also serve as a valuable administrative tool for universities. The platform assists institutional staff in managing academic approvals, administering scholarships, streamlining program discovery, and tracking student participation data, all while preserving institutional oversight regarding strict academic requirements and policies.

API leadership believes this tech-driven approach will empower higher education institutions to effectively respond to mounting external pressures to prove the tangible employability outcomes of international education, while simultaneously expanding access to global programs.

"Global learning should be a pathway for the many, not a privilege for the few," Vogt said. "With The Intern Group, more students can study abroad, gain real professional experience, and return ready for what’s next."

Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, API currently facilitates international education programs spanning nearly 80 cities across 30 countries worldwide. The Intern Group, established in 2011, will now operate under a newly formed division titled the API Intern Group, maintaining its core focus on delivering high-impact international internships and career-focused global experiences.

Vogt confirmed to The PIE News that David Lloyd will step into the role of president of the newly formed division, reporting directly to him. Furthermore, API intends to retain all existing employees from both organizations to ensure operational continuity.

"Our approach to integration is simple: create one global organisation and don’t break what works," Vogt concluded. "Both teams bring deep expertise, and our job is to build on it and grow student participation with our member and affiliate institutions."
